Romans Story

On January 31st, 2023, Roman’s life changed forever. What started as an ordinary visit to a local mum-and-baby group turned into a devastating accident.

Within minutes of arriving, Roman accidentally pulled a thermal cup of freshly made tea off the table and onto himself. The cup’s insulated design retained the heat, and the tea contained sugar, which caused it to cling to his skin, resulting in severe burns.

Roman was rushed to Newham A&E, where doctors quickly assessed his injuries. He was then transferred to the specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford for urgent care.

His facial burns were classified as superficial, requiring three daily debridements—a painful procedure where the scabs were removed to prevent infection. Each time, this was done while Roman was awake.

His neck and chest burns were full-thickness, meaning he needed a skin graft. The skin was taken from his left thigh, leaving a scar from the top of his thigh down to his knee. His neck and chest scars will be permanent.

Despite everything, Roman showed incredible strength throughout his treatment.

Giving Back to the Burns Unit

During their stay in the burns ward, Amy noticed something heartbreaking—basic necessities were lacking. Many of the toys were broken, and even small things like weaning spoons were in short supply. Roman, unable to open his mouth wide enough for a normal spoon, struggled to eat because there was only one suitable spoon available.

Determined to make a difference, Amy created an Amazon wishlist to provide essentials for the ward. Thanks to her efforts, the unit received:

. Pyjamas

. Toothbrushes & toothpaste

. Spoons, cups, and beakers

. Books, arts & crafts supplies

. New toys for children in care

Roman’s Recovery & The Power of Support

Roman’s rehabilitation journey has been remarkable. Over the past two years, he has undergone:

. Five months of compression therapy

. Silicone therapy to help with healing

. Daily scar massages (three times a day)

Throughout it all, the Children’s Burns Trust has played a crucial role. This non-government-funded charity provides essential equipment, rehabilitation services, and financial support for parents staying with their children during treatment.

How You Can Help?

Now, two years later, Amy is determined to give back even more. Having already raised over £500 for the Children’s Burns Trust, she is now taking on an even bigger challenge—running a half marathon this September!

She is calling on everyone to share Roman’s story, raise awareness about burns, and help raise as much money as possible for this incredible cause.

🧡 Every donation, big or small, makes a difference. Please consider supporting Amy’s journey and helping children like Roman on their road to recovery.
